Generally, the mismatch in personalities is the cause of divorce, meanwhile, the most typical reason for people to be removed from a position is “I wanted it to come in reality”. There is a common thing about these two situations, they both happened due to many reasons and errors. Although the causes for a broken romantic relationship were commonly researched and revealed, “The boss-staff” connection hasn’t yet been deeply studied.
We have investigated and discovered 10 mistakes which are often found in dismissed employees when they interact with bosses. We don’t expect you to find yourself in any of the below cases. In the bad scenario, we do hope that the article could help you find a way to fix it.
“I need an increase in my salary because I need to fix my house.”
It is your legal right to ask for a raise if you have gained certain accomplishments at work. However, it is not right to ask for a raise due to your personal issues, it shouldn’t be mentioned in a professional workplace. As h*rtful as it might be, your personal issues are not your boss’s concern. Of course you are allowed to ask for assistance in a serious challenging situation. But if you are not in an urgent situation, you need to earn your raise with persuasive evidence, not ask for your boss’ sympathy.
A different method to do it: “I have brought back for our company many valuable clients, therefore I am asking for a raise.”
“Can I leave after lunch today? There is nothing to do in the office anyway.”
Many companies only require employees to finish their daily assigned tasks and people can spend time as they wish after they completed them. However, if your company is not that kind of organization, this phrase will bring you no good. Firstly, it will indicate that you are not too excited to work. Secondly, you will receive a new bunch of tasks and you won’t get to leave.
A different method to do it: “Can I leave after lunch today?” Normally, you should mention the reason however it isn’t always required. Keep in mind that you shouldn’t say something which refer to your disinterest.
“It’s all Tom’s fault.”
A mature person would be able to admit their mistake and not blame others. The mature staffs are those who earn trust and respect from their boss though sometime they do mess up. But when it is truly not your fault, you should find a different way to privately indicate it and you should only do it if it is worth mentioned. We all find people with pointing fingers untrusted.
A different method to do it: “Oh I can see, I think I must have missed it. I’ll pay attention next time. Now there are some solutions …”
If you don’t want to be involved any more, just leave. If you always make a scene just to defend your point of view, people may be a little disrespectful to you. Everyone can be replaced, you are just a drop of water in the sea. So people might not be open with you if you keep ending the conversation this way.
A different method to do it: “I think we are not on the same page”
“We’ve always done it like this.”
It doesn’t matter if you refer to your former employer or your own experience. This expression will remind people of phrases such as “I know a person who can do it better”. People would feel a bit offended and this phrase can indicate that this person is a bit unopened and passive. The world keeps moving forward and people who have a progressive mind will be treasured.
A different method to do it: “That is a new way. There might be many outcomes if we do it that way”
If you say this, people will assume that you don’t intend to complete the task. And if things don’t turn out the way it’s supposed to, you can get away. If you say this to your boss, your boss will take it as “I won’t do it”. There is a phrase that is worse than it, that is “I can’t do it”. In working environment, practical result is very crucial. Therefore, problems should be discussed directly to prevent bad outcomes. And you should be truthful about when and where the problem occurs to solve the problem.
A different method to do it: “Yes, I’ll take care of it” or “it take time to find solutions, possibly 2 days”
“I have too many things to do.”
Every employee is putting effort to achieve a target. Most of your tasks would likely be relevant to that target. When you are assigned new tasks, the target might have been adjusted. Therefore, you should build a habit to make priority at work. Occasionally, the new task is more important so you have to put everything behind to complete it or conversely. If your common tasks need to be done first, explain to your boss so that he or she can find someone to cover it.
A different method to do it: “I’m in the middle of our old plan, is this task more urgent?”
“What’s in it for me?”
It is fair that you should be rewarded for your dedication. However, you shouldn’t ask for reward when you only do a little work. Yet, you shouldn’t be too kind and agree to help everything for free, people will exploit you and take you for granted. Just make sure that you agreed to help in a situation which is urgent, not a situation where people just take advantage of you and you have to spend your holiday at work.
A different method to do it: Just politely say “yes”.
“It’s not my problem.”
Working in one company means you are on the same boat. A small problem which doesn’t seem to concern you today might be the cause of your problem tomorrow. If you have the solution, propose it to your boss. It might not be the best solution, still, it shows that you put your mind in it and you can become a reliable person to your boss. That means something.
A different method to do it: “I was wondering if this could help solving our current problem …”
“I just thought…”
When a boss hears this, he or she tends to be disappointed. On the good side, this shows that you did think about it. On the bad side, you didn’t fully understand your task, you need to simplify everything before putting your hand to it. But as mentioned above, the ability to admit your mistake is worth being grateful.
A different method to do it: “I might have missed something. I will handle the situation.”
